Stuart Barnes

Songs and stories. Has a lot of new stuff. Went very well. Good comedy, plenty of laughs, and liberal applause. Stronger than we thought. 20 mins. in one.

Carter De Haven Sextette

Carter De Haven and five girls, singing and dancing act, entitled “An Easy Angel.” The photos in the lobby are not those of the bunch of girls that appeared here today. Rather a good act – quite showy – but most of the stuff in the imitations was local to New York, and did not go as well here as the singing and dancing, which went very well, especially at the close. Good act. 25 mins. Cut Garden in 4, back garden in 5.

Chas. Hawtrey & Co.

Sketch, “Time is Money.” Mr. Hawtrey is assisted by two ladies. The sketch is a good one. Hawtrey, as would be expected, is extremely clever in the comedy role, and the sketch went with laughter throughout. His support is not what it should be. The maid is good, but the lady playing with him chews her words fearfully, and weakens the act. However, Hawtrey is clever enough to compel the audience to overlook his opposite. 30 mins. C.D.F. in 3.

McMahon & Chappelle

Man and woman, in their well known comedy act. They call it “Twenty Minutes Before Train Time.” A very good talking act – bright and clever throughout – and the audience laughed and applauded liberally. 14 mins. in one.

Melich’s Birds

About twenty-five cockatoos and parrots. A corking good act. The birds do acrobatic and horizontal bar work, ride bicycles, turn somersaults, and do a great deal of other work that is really incredible. An excellent act. Applause throughout. 11 mins. Gar. in 4.

Waller & Magill

Man and woman in a “kid” sketch, entitled “A Pistol Card,” in which both are made up as juveniles. Not an exceptionally bright affair. After some objectionable talk is cut out the act will serve to fill in the very early bill, and that’s all. 18 mins. C.D.F. in 3.

Campbell & Caulfield

Two men, Irish comedians, talking and singing – mostly the regular street cross-fire talk. These acts are not like here, and the most they can do is to fill in time on the early bill. They stand no show at all if in the two-show section. 12 mins. in one.

Midgley & Carlisle

23 mins. C.D.F. in 3. In their well known sketch “Taking a Tonic.” Well known on the circuit – always make good here, and were very welcome today, as most of the previous comedy had failed to make any impression on the audience.

Francis Gerard

13 mins. Gar. in 3. Herculean gymnast. Act is well known on the circuit. Opens with posing in the cabinet, and then does his balancing and lifting. A good act, but could be improved if he did not continually look at the audience for “kind applause.”

Four Goodfellow Bros.

9 mins. Black Drop in 3. Spec. set. Four boys, club jugglers, using illuminated clubs. Local act. Amateurs. When they get the act working right, the light affects will be very pretty.
