Juggling Matthiews [sic]

Man does some fairly good juggling from a 3 a day standpoint; the woman is simply an assistant. No reason on earth why they should get as much money as they do, because it is entirely a single act, the woman cuts no figure whatever. 11 min, full stage, 3 shows. Could do a short close in 1.

Horace Goldin

‘The King Magician.’ 25 min, FS. Carries his own drop which, along with his men in uniform, makes a splendid showing. This is the most rapid-working magician act ever seen. The audience was worked up to the highest pitch of interest with every new surprise. None of his tricks were too obvious. Taken altogether, these illusions stamp him as genius in his line, and he could easily have held the audience for three times the time limit as they applauded constantly and were hungry for more. Every feat got a ringing hand. Regard him as one of the greatest Vaudeville attractions ever offered anywhere. We are billing him and ‘Motoring’ to the limit, and there is no doubt they will pull big nosiness for the rest of the week.

Harry Tate

‘Motoring.’ 15 min, FS. Everything that has been said about this act being a scream is enthusiastically voted here. It was not thirty seconds before the audience began to titter, and later broke into roars. As a burlesque on the trials and vicissitudes of the automobile fiend, it is the best ever. The lines are bright and the surprises many. The finish was of the rough and tumble order that caught everybody from orchestra to galley.

Monroe, Mack & Lawrence

‘Maggie’s Day Off.’ 16 min, FS. Got some advance applause. Monroe started off in a great style and the roars of laughter were continuous throughout the whole act. The situations were grotesque, and the rough and tumble comedy makes it very valuable for this place on the bill. The applause was constant and at the finish there was a rousing hand.

Barrows Lancaster Co.

3 men and one woman. Patriotic sketch entitled ‘Tactics.’ This is one of the best sketches I have ever seen in this theatre, excepting none. It received tremendous applause, and took five curtain calls. I want to play the act again next season, for it will bear repeating. For Cleveland, I would rather have this sketch, than either Hilliard, Bergere, or Rose Stahl. It made a pernounced [sic] hit. CDF in 3. 24 min.

Harry Evans

Boy Vocalist. This is the boy whom John D. Rockefeller became interested after hearing him sing in his church here. Mr. Rockefeller wanted to send the boy away and give him a musical education. The boys mother was obstinate, and would not let him go. He has an excellent voice – a very high tenor, and can use it to good advantage. I put him in place of Louise Dresser. He went exceptionally well, and received a great deal of applause. This is a mighty good act for the circuit for $60.00 and 3 shows to start on. It is a new face, and the boy is sure to make good. 12 min. drop in one.

Six Provenceas

Six girls in a bicycle act similar to the Kaufmans. Two of them do some remarkably clever work which should be better later as they made their first American appearance to-day with only one rehearsal. Had we not had the Kaufmans ahead of them, this act would have been almost a sensation, but it is not as good as the other act. Consequently didn’t go as strongly. 15 min. full stage, 2 shows.

Willie Ecksteinf

Boy pianist. The boy is really remarkable for his execution, but he reaches the two extremes in his selections. They are too severely classical and his encore to [sic] cheap and trashy. I tried to have him make some changes, but had nothing else prepared. However it is a first class act. Care should be taken to secure, before his arrival, a Grand Piano, tuned exactly with the orchestra. For want of that knowledge I had considerable trouble this morning. 15 min. in 1, 2 shows.

Cooper & Robinson

I will have to go on record and disagree with about everyone else as to the value of this act. They do 13 min. and it is only in the last four or five minutes of their turn that they make a hit. I consider that act decidedly overpaid and I do not think they are as good as Murphy & Francis and some other Blackfaced acts. 2 shows, in one.

McNamee

Clay modeller [sic]. We haven’t had an act of this kind for a long time so it is something of a novelty again. It is a change from the ordinary run of three a day acts and good for that reason, he also does some clever work. 10 min. in 2, 3 shows.
