2 shows, 16 min, full stage. Six young women whose work is similar to the Kaufmanns. One of the girls is a very rapid worker and drew big applause for her work here today. I have no doubt but what the fact that we played the Kaufmanns here about a month ago, and for two weeks at that, took considerable from the appreciation is this act shown today.
3 shows, 13 min, open in 2, close in 1. Man and woman juggling small articles. The woman is a mere ornament. The cigar box juggling, of which there was considerable, was spoiled by the reason of fact that Harrigan appeared here last week. Can be considered a fair act from the 3-a-day standpoint.
2 shows, 11 min in 1. Colored entertainers using a couple of special drops. It is not the place for this team by any means, even if we had no such act as Houdini preceding it. They started off very slow but closed strong. I do not wish to convey the idea that it is a poor act, because personally I think it is a good one, and away from the usual run of colored teams, but it is not a good act for the last spot in one.
2 shows, 16 min, full stage. He has an entire new list of subjects including two bronzes since he was last here. While I think they are the best groupings he has ever given us, although appreciating the artistic beauty, they would rather see them elsewhere than in a vaudeville theatre. The bronzes drew a lot of applause while those to which I refer elicited none.
2 shows 29 min, full stage. (Can close in 1, if necessary.) Has been described in the other houses. I don’t think the act is worth what we are paying, and I do not believe a great many patrons are familiar with the race track, still, it went better than I thought. Cannot be considered a good act for the money. Cut ‘Six Little Tailors,’ as it might refer to a firm in this city.
2 shows, 24 min, open in 3, close in 1. Comedy singing and dancing skit, ‘The Village Cut-up,’ These people are very popular hereabouts, being Bostonians. They have come bright material and they are both very clever. The act was the applause hit of the show up to this point. Mr. Barry’s imitation of Dan Daly is the best which has come this was. His story about a man who was one half limb and half tree and about being told to be sure to keep out of the woodshed, which was decidedly suggestive and which I cut out.
2 shows, 22 min, open in 2, close in 1. Well-known vocal novelty. This afternoon there were some trouble with the carbons, at times the pictures flickering out altogether. I don’t think the picture part of it has any value in this house, or but very little, but the quintette of men are excellent as vocalists. The song ‘My Rosary’ went very big and they were compelled to respond to an encore, ‘In My Oldsmobile,’ which I promptly cut. The can advettise [sic] their autos on billboards or change to ‘automobile.’
First appearance in years. This man has greatly improved. Act consists of ponies drilling, monkey doing a society act on a pony, bear waltzing, dog doing a somersault on pony’s back while galloping. The trained bear is immense. He jumps from a bridge on both sides of the stage to the pony’s back, which is quite novel for an animal of this nature. He also salutes at the command of his trainer, which is quite a scream. His leaping dogs are good, but not as strong as some we have had. The wrestling part of the act was cut out of the account of illness of ‘Banner,’ which he claimed was injured yesterday. The act is good in spots. He introduces an Englishman in eccentric makeup, who does some pretty fair acrobatic stunts with a little comedy sandwiched in between, which seemed to amuse a little. I presume if this man had a large stage with better facilities of handling his ‘props,’ he could do a pretty fair act. Acts of this nature does not appeal to the male portion of the Union Square audience. 21 min.
Heavyweight juggler. First time here. This man opened a little tame. Being nervous, missed some of his tricks, but later on got the audience and held them. All of his heavy work was strongly applauded and he will no doubt create some talk, as he is one of the best heavyweight jugglers we ever had. Compelled to take several bows on his finish. The applause hit of the show. The assistant secured quite a number of laughs for his comedy. 26 min – full stage – 2 shows.
Instrumental imitator. First time here. This man presents sort of novelty, giving imitations of mandolin, violin, harp concertina, cornet and clarinet, using only his mouth with a small horn for an effect. He opened rather tame, but got them on his finish. Some of his work went very strong, while a few of the imitations just about passed. He makes an elegant appearance and is a thorough artist. 13 min – drapery in one – 2 shows.
