Ed Payne's "The Edge of the Whirlpool" is about the adventures of "Billy, the Boy Artist." The Boston Globe cartoonist's playlet is acted out by Meek and his company. The sketch is set in the modern day Latin Quarter of Paris. It tells the story of a young, rich American girl visiting the French city with her mother. A French nobleman intends to rob her but his plan is foiled by his friend Dick Crosby, played by Meek. A novel plot follows. Anna Cleveland plays the French adventuress, Florence Shirley the heroine, and John Meehan the English villain.
There is no doubt that this playlet was a major success both in the skill of the performance and its popularity with the audience.
