Singing.
"Goodbye."
The applause was spontaneous.
Bertha Shalek, prima donna, scaled vocal heights generally expected of cultured singers but on the first show Monday was unable to run with proper accord with the orchestra. Miss Shalek has a voice of high range, prodigious volume but in each number she displayed a noticeable lisping accent. Her best was "Goodbye," giving the voice full swing though she obliged with an encore that proved she wasn't stingy.
