The stage was set as a parlor, profusely decorated with American beauty roses, framed into which a grand piano and accompanist were set. The former prima donna was clad in a beautiful hand-painted evening gown, carrying numerous jewels.
"The American Beauty," slightly stouter than usual, was as confident as ever.Russell sand four songs, "I've Something Sweet to Tell You," "Only a Rose," "The Guardian Angel," closing with the old "Fiddle-Dee-Dee" favorite, "Come Down, Ma Evening Star."
Russell entered and waited for a reception which was not forthcoming, This seemed to make the opera star rather nervous. This resulted in her speaking to her accompanist and changing the order of her songs. There was little applause to interrupt until her closing number caused the audience to applaud sufficiently to call forth an encore, for which she sang "My Cherie." She gained a laugh when she came out for her final number whispering, "I'm so nervous."
