They succeeded in performing their new single-handed balancing trick after only one miss. The top mounter must be a man with sufficient strength and is therefore the heavy one. Ed Bard is the understander. The top mounter thus had a close eye contact with Ed as the catch-as-catch-can hold made. The act must have been somewhat painful for Ed.
