Hal Stephens impersonates four very distinct characters: Shylock; Mr. Weller in the wrong bedroom of the White Horse Inn; Rip Van Winkle, before and after his long sleep; and Judas Iscariot after he has learned the results of his treachery.
Stephens is a master in the art of make-up; his running commentary during these changes are interesting and instructive. He is striking effective in both straight character pieces - Mr. Weller and Rip Van Winkle. His Winkle is humorous, poetic and pathetic. However his more tragic roles, Shylock and Judas are not as convincing. This is in part because his round face and short nose do not suit the Jewish stereotype.
