Emma had a new monologue written for her by Vincent Bryan, dealing with the vagaries of marital relations in the summertime and other kindred topics, delivered in the Carus style and with Carus gestures. It serves as an excellent interlude to her new songs, which are the best she has ever had. "Alexander" has all the swing and metrical precision of "Kelly," which Miss Carus brought to this country with her from England three years ago. "When I'm in Town I'm Lonesome," which was Emma's last song, called for five encores and Miss Carus obligingly sang an old favourite, "Mary Ann," as a bonus.
Miss Carus was enthusiastically received.
The comedienne's reappearance was a success from every standpoint. Her voice has as much power and freshness as though she has been resting all season, and she uses it with good judgement and careful shading.
