In “the Call of Childhood.” 24 minutes f.s. Special set. Mr. Devoy’s new act was a hit. Has a beautiful story, with four child characters, written about the spirit of Halloween, and Mr. Devoy, as “Adam Crabb.” The old grouch, got many laughs. Held the interest every minute, and closed strong. As act that will appeal particularly to women and children. The company is large, all capable and the production thoroughly satisfactory.
Annoyed at the Piano by Freddie Clinton. 23 minutes in one. Olio drop. Morrisey makes his entrance as a violinist, and after some “sour” harmony has been extracted from the instrument, he proceeds to put over a singing and comedy turn with imitations, that was a hit as both performances Monday. We cut out nearly all of his jokes after the matinee. He proved he did not need this blue material by going better at night than he did in the afternoon.
In “The Golden Night.” 20 minutes f.s. C.D.F. A comedy sketch built around the golden wedding celebration of an old couple, who manage to re-united their grand-children in the course of the evening, before a quarrel reaches the divorce court stage. A neat little turn and a good vehicle for Mrs. Whiffen. Held the interest and closed very well.
14 minutes in one. Garden drop. Doing the same act that was formerly done by Inglis & Hawthorne. Miss Reading is not an improvement. Inglis is as funny as ever, and got quite a number of laughs. They both work hard every minute, and the act has “pep”, which is the saving feature.
17 minutes f.s. C.D.F. and Plush special drapery. Doing the same old act, the only change being a couple of published songs that have been sung to death in this house. They did not arouse much enthusiasm until the final number, “What Will You Do?”, which got over.
19 min. This was his first appearance in Philadelphia in eight years and he was given a warm reception by a large house. His offering consisted of a routine of stories, some of them personal and not all of them new. He finished with the “Danny Deever” recitation which scored a big hit for him. He closed to a big hand.
“The Garden of Love.” 29 min. A very pleasing tabloid musical comedy. The dialogue is bright and the comedy arouses a liberal amount of laughs. There is a company of three male singers supporting the principals and they aid in introducing several catchy musical numbers which are well sung. The act made a very good impression and finished strong.
15 min. A collection of the best comedy songs we have heard for some time helped this girl to put over a good sized laughing and applause hit. She injects plenty of spirit into her work which caught on with the audience at once and each song brought her liberal applause. She finished to a very big hand.
13 min. “Charlie’s Visit.” Man and woman in a singing and talking skit. The man’s comedy carries the act along with fair speed, his clever eccentric dancing contortion work standing out as the feature for the few laughs the act received. Girl sings two songs and they closed with some dancing that brought a good hand.
Two women one man in full stage. 15 min. Sketch “Me and Mary.” One song is used by the Co. This sketch did not please as it seemed unfinished to most of our patrons who it we had cut some on acct of holiday.
