In “The School of Acting.” This act was a genuine hit all the way through, the laughs being fast and furious from almost the beginning to the end. Certainly a great laughing vehicle. 27 minutes, wood in 4.
This act went very well and held the attention throughout without any trouble. Since last here Niblo has added a third bird to the act, the introduction of which injects considerable comedy. The work of all three seemed to hold the closest attention, the finish of the act being moderately strong. 12 minutes, olio in 1.
Same clever little pair as ever, doing “At the News Stand.” A lot of comedy in the lines and the kind of singing and dancing this pair is noted for. The act went very well all the way through and finished O.K. Pat is greatly worried because is on so early and I will no doubt have to pat him on the back and talk him out of it. The act is really all that could be desired. 13 minutes, special set in 2.
Young woman and boy about 14 years old who introduces a taking line of violin and violin and ‘cello duos. A very pleasing little act which held the attention moderately well. The weakest point in the act is the dressing, which could be greatly improved, although they do not really look poor. Both could array themselves with much better taste and in this manner enhance the merit of the act. The musical work is O.K. and they finish moderately strong. Street in 1, 10 minutes.
Comedy bar act with three man doing characters—German, Chink and Irishman. This is a good lively act with liberal allotment of rough comedy in the way of falls, and cleverly executed tricks. Act made an excellent opener and finished strong. Garden in 3, 7 minutes.
“The City of Bruges, Holland.” Exceedingly interesting and our Daylight apparatus brought out the fine points to perfection. “Jerome Buys An Automobile.” Very amusing comedy and not too long.
11 min. F.S. This is a mighty pretty act and makes an excellent closer. The two Lilliputians make a cute appearance that especially appeals to the children, and their work is nothing short of extraordinary. The act moves swift and brilliantly up to a big finish with the whirling pole supported on the man’s feet. This got very strong applause.
32 min. in one. Second and last week. From today’s house and enthusiasm, it is safe to predict that Tanguay is still drawing them and will continue to do so. Sang her usual repertoire and received enthusiastic applause from the advance hand up to the finish. Her “money” song, during which she scatters pennies into the audience, made its usual sensation. People have an idea that these pennies are a sort of mascot and carry them away for souvenirs. As far as Philadelphia is concerned, Tanguay is without doubt Vaudeville’s best card as she not only draws them in, but sends them away satisfied and is undoubtedly this season doing the best and most varied act she has ever done.
“The Awakening of Pipp.” 24 min. F.S. Mr. Grapewin has appeared here in various theatres as a star of his own company and has a strong following. His comedy work as the “rounder” in the bedroom scene the “morning after” with his reproving wife was alternately funny and pathetic, the character humor, of course, getting big laughter from all parts of the house. The climax is particularly clever and leaves no offensive impression in the minds of the audience. Closed very strong.
14 min. F.S., close in one. Carry an effective set showing an Italian scene with the Bay of Naples, Vesuvius, in the background. Make a very pretty appearance in typical Neapolitan costume, and sing the characteristic folk song of the country. Good applause after each selection.
