In Geo. Ade’s one act comedy. “The Mayor and the Manicure”. An exceptionally good and excellently portrayed legitimate one act comedy in the hands of a very capable act. The story is of decided interest and is carefully worked out in every particular. The work of the cast individually and collectively is above reproach, and there is no question as to the act being a hit.
Songstress-comedienne. She sang a number of songs and all them very successfully. Made as big a hit for a single woman act as almost anything that has ever played in the house. At the finish they would not let her leave the stage but compelled her to respond with another song and numerous bows. She is a very clever artist and mist be given credit for making a bona fide out-and-out hit. 20 minutes, olio in 1.
In what they term a fantasy, “Winning a Queen”. The act is in three scenes with Moving Picture connections from one to the other. The offering is a trifle drawn out and at times seemed to be a little tiresome. However, there were a number of laughs scattered along the way and the finish of the act was unexpectedly strong. Would term it a moderate success but nothing big. 19 minutes, special sets in 1, 2 and 4.
Comedy talking act in 1, entitled “On Father’s Train”. One works straight, the other eccentric comedy. Their line of talk is fast and full of good points, none of which failed to make a favorable impression. They went very big and were compelled to take several bows at the finish. 13 minutes, street in 1.
Man and woman in an exceptionally good acrobatic and equilibrist offering. They both make a first-class appearance from the front, are exceedingly graceful and finished in all their work, and the act made an unmistakable hit, finishing very strong. 9 minutes, C.D.F. in 5.
“Swimming Among Ice Cakes”. On at 4:11, 14 minutes full store. We have built a production around this act and this afternoon it held the audience and sent them away talking. The curtain rises on a dark stage with moonlight effects over the ice fields and ripple. Moon sinks out of sight, and ripple disappears, and then there are aurora borealis effects. These are reproductions of paintings made by Stokes, the artist who went with the Peary expedition, and are different from anything previously shown. This afternoon it seemed to be the opinion of the regular patrons that we did not give enough of them. After the aurora borealis dies out there is a sunrise effect over the ice fields, the light gradually coming up to the working stage. Mahoney makes his appearance from the tank where he has been during the time required to show the light effects, about four minutes, and he got a big hand this afternoon on his entrance. Then he sits on a cake of ice while he brushes the water from his legs, immediately sets up and begins to illustrate the exercise by which he developed himself, interjecting some explanatory remarks. All of which held the audience, and after which he returned to the tank. In the tank he swims among the cakes of ice, throws them about, dives over and under them, for several minutes and then comes up. His final exit is into the tank going down with the curtain holding a large cake of ice over his head and as he disappears under the war the ice he held comes down with a splash. The entire act went very much better than we expected this afternoon and not only the novelty of the ice swimming but the light effects got the people talking as they went out.
On at 3:27, 16 minutes in 1. These boys have a decided novelty but I was a little afraid of them in this place as their work is barely quick enough. They have some very good songs, their talk is good, and their eccentric dancing, their hypnotic and rube dances with which they closed all get good hands. When they get right down to the vaudeville spirit and work faster this ought to be a very good act in most any spot.
On at 3:13, 14 minutes full stage. Madam Guilbert got a splendid reception when she made her appearance this afternoon and while there were no great demonstrations all her numbers were well received. She certainly made a favorable impression and will draw some business, but I am afraid not in proportion to her salary.
F.S. Special. Time 16. 7 men, 2 women. This great risley and acrobatic feature went as strong as ever at the Monday matinee. Their straight work is varied and fast. They have injected considerable new comedy.
3 men. 21 min. F.S. Presenting “A One Night Stand in Minstrelsy”. The big feature is their remarkable eccentric dancing. One of the biggest hits of the season. Close in 1.
