Wooden shoe & Voc – 10 min. in 1. 2 shows. On at 8:22. Well known on the Circuit. Both work straight. Girl makes a rather pleasing appearance, sings quite well. The best part of the act is the wooden-shoe dancing of Hathaway which got the house very big. There is no doubt that an act of this kind is well liked by our audiences. Closed well with curtain call
“Skatorialism” – 12min. F.S. 2 shows. On at 8:10. These people are certainly immense. One works straight and the other eccentric blackface. The act does not consist of very much else other than some ridiculous roller-skate falls all over the stage, but it keeps the audience in roars of laughter. The last part of the act, the dancing on roller skates, is simply immense. It no only received big applause throughout, but five curtain calls. This act will certainly wake up the coldest audience,-placed anywhere on the bill.
“The Ebony Duo” (colored) – 13 min. in 1. 3 shows. ON at 7:42. Man and woman. This is a very coon act, as coon acts go. Both work straight. Their line or talk is amusing and their songs are good and the uncommonly pretty fact of the octoroon helps to win the audience. Each one of their numbers received good hand. Closed well. Could hold and even better spot.
Acro. Com – 10min. F.S. 3 shows. ON at 7:32. (Close in 1 for one minute.) Two men, both working eccentric. This is a knock-about act, part of which is after the manner of Rosaire & Doretto, using tables and chairs, making funny falls, etc. It also includes some good straight acrobatic work that makes it more acceptable than it would otherwise be. The work is swift and pleasing, and the audience liked it. Fair applause throughout, and the close was good.
12 min. F.S. 3 shows. ON at 7:03. Axtelle had the misfortune to lose his dog, which handicapped his act very much this afternoon. The understudy canine that he substituted was not up to the requirements. Axtelle’s line of talk is rather amusing although too lengthy, but his contortion work is so good that it had the act hold the place acceptably. His tramp costume is very amusing in itself. He works with table and two chairs. Closed well.
eight men, two women and a boy, proved to be the acrobatic sensation of the season. The boy, who dressed as a girl, is the star feature of the act. Not one person in ten thousand in the audience would suspect him of being a boy, and the triple and double somersaults he performs are really wonderful. 7 min. FS.
Comedy:- 10 min. F.S. 2 shows. On at 7:57. This is one of the funniest knock-about acts that we have ever had. It is a perfect scream. The dwarf appears in a costume of a little Irishman and the giant in a grotesque women’s attire. The act consists in a little talk and a good deal of tumbling, the giant being something of a contortionist and the dwarf taking the ludicrous falls, a good deal after the manner of Buster Keaton. The finish of the act, (throwing the dwarf into one of the stage boxes) brought tremendous laughter and won for them three curtain calls.
Scotch comedian:- 20 min in 1. 2 shows. ON at 7:37. We were led to believe that this act was so very Scotch that it would not appeal to our audiences very strongly. However, the novelty of Whitford’s work seemed to get them interested right away and he received good hands for each one of his songs. Whitford keeps constantly in motion from one end of the stage to the other, and puts in a lot of funny business that brings titter from all parts of the house. His stories are told quite originally, and altogether there is a sprightliness and sureness about his work that ought to make him a favorite. Think that he will go even better and stronger with the evening audiences this week. Will go down a little further on the bill.
15 min. F.S. 3 shows. ON at 7:17. This local act has improved very much since it was here last year. The little girl is much more expert, older and prettier and the costuming, as well as the dressing of the act is much improved. Her animals consist of baboon, two small monkeys and three well trained dogs who perform the usual animal stunts, receiving good hand. The closing feature of the act is a miniature circus, one of the dogs masqueraded as a horse, the monkeys jumping off and on from a small pedestal. Received very good hand at close. Safe three-a-day for any house and was put down the bill after first performance.
Unparalleled Cyclists. 2 Straight and one comedy. This to my mind is one of the best bicycle acts in the business, and considering that they did not go on until 4:30, when our audiences are usually leaving the Theatre, they certainly made the hit of the show, and got the most applause at finish. 15 minutes
