Young woman assisted by young man in singing and dancing act. First part of act consists of Girl being drawn in a Jinricksha by man. Both in pretty Jap Costumes, and their song and dance got a big hand. Quick change of both to modern dress. This number went only fair. Last change to pretty yellow costumes, and song and dance. This was a big hit. The act is a “find”, and ought to be looked after. 11 minutes, full stage, close in one. Three shows.
2 men and 3 women. This young man presented an excellent illusion act. He makes an elegant appearance. Pleasing personality. Talks very little and is a rapid worker. All of his illusions are excellent, well executed and leave the audience spell-bound. Some of the illusions were strongly applauded and others were so sensational that the audience are still wondering how he did it. 22 min.
16 minutes. ON at 9.43. Opens in 1, with a song and an amusing line of talk. Goes to F.S. with a change of costume. The work of this man is certainly original, and the fun is increased by his grotesque figure and facial expression. Got a good many laughs and strong applause after his selections on the piccolo and one-string violin. His sewing-table bag-pipe and hat-rack whistle got an immense hand. This man could hold any spot on the bill with credit.
14 minutes. ON at 8.00. Four people. 3 acrobats and a coon. This is a very interesting act throughout. The little fellow is certainly a wonder – not only in acrobatic skill, but he is a genius in humor as well. Some of the tumbling stunts are really beyond anything ever seen here. The applause which greeted one brilliant feat after another was big. The paraphernalia includes a manikin, a tos sing board, skidding bar and even an Angora cat. Received four encores. This act is sure to be talked about. It is certainly the “goods”
ON at 10 o’clock, 10 min, full stage. IN many respects the greatest animal act I have ever looked at. I certainly have never seen an act of the kind make such a hit with an audience. Those present this afternoon and evening simply shrieked at the finish. It will be a pity if this act is allowed to escape us for next season. He is in demand, and knows his value and says he will not close a contract until he has been on the Roof several weeks.
ON at 7.29, 12 min, in 1. I do not think I am drawing a long bow when I state that this girl can sing as well or better than the majority of our $250 and $400 stars, like Bessie Wynn and Julia Sanderson. She has a very winning stage presence, dresses in good taste and is not fifty percent affectation. The men she has singing in the box with her could be greatly improved upon. I would not hesitate to use her as late as 9 o’clock, if necessary.
ON at 7.03, 11 min, full stage; can close in 1, if necessary; 3 shows. A character change act that seems like a novelty, it has been so it has been so long since I have seen one like it. Their changes are really great, and if their voices were equal to their character work, they would be holding down 8.0 and 9.00 spots. As it is, their vocal work handicaps them.
3 men. Comedy acrobats. This act without a doubt is one of the best acts of its kind we have had in some time. They do some very clever tumbling, and Mr Welch’s comedy talk certainly had them laughing all the time. They close their act with a burlesque base ball game which is about the best I have seen, and audience seemed to have the same opinion. 19 minutes in one.
Parisian Street Minstrels. The hit of the bill. Their singing and playing went heavily and they were recalled several times. Had I have known that the violinist was as good as he is I would have billed him big and made a feature of him for the town which is very musical. Last night in spite of the fact that the hot weather reduced my audience greatly, he was a terrific hit and they would hardly let him off the stage. Judging from the opening performance this act in going to go unusually well and if I get it again I am going to play it up big. Street 16 minutes.
Comedienne. 1 min. in 1. 2 shows. ON at 10:10. Miss Tanguay is taking the qualifying adjective “cyclonic” admirably. It just suits her. She is certainly a whirlwind entertainer from start to finish. She dashes from one end of the stage to the other, getting her audience from the first and clinching them to the finish. Makes four changes of stunning costumes, (the last one very, very Summery) and makes a hit in every one of her songs. I do not remember having heard a burst of applause more enthusiastic than that followed her song, “Success”. It was a knock-out. Miss Tanguay will certainly draw big this week, and we look for a general riot from the evening audiences.
