10 Min F.S. Well known on the Circuit. Act seems altogether better than when seen here before. Her singing was not particularly brilliant, but her acrobatic work and wooden-shoe dance got the house. The two Arab boys which she carries with her are typical acrobats. The little one is a positive treat. Big hand at the finish. An encore and a curtain call.
8 Min F.S. This would make an excellent closing act if needed. There are three young men in the act, becomingly dressed as Nile fishermen. The bounding net is set in the form of the deck of Cleopatra’s barge, and the drop in the rear is a Nile scene. Their work is very expert and they got constant applause, winding up with a big flourish. An act for anywhere on the bill.
10 Min. in 1. This singer is not particularly pre-possessing, although she is pleasantly gowned. Her voice is phenomenal in a way, but would be much more effective in a trio or quartette. Her voice is a very small range and for that reason monotonous. Only a moderate hand. Her song “Theodore” saved her, and she went off to fairly good “kind applause” on the part of the patriots. Miss Stewart should hitch up with a good combination, for she is not strong enough to go it alone in a house this.
16 Min. in 3, Close in 1. Two colored men, being fair musicians and making a good opener. Play on musical pipes, bells, cornet, sleigh-bells etc. Received some applause after each one of their selections. The close in one, in which Ray does some good dancing to the accompaniment of his partner on the bells, merited the good hand he received. Two curtain calls and encore at close. The comedy is a little shy, but altogether it is a safe opener for any house.
24 min F.S. This is a very novel and effective piece of playwriting and acting, whereas the movement at first is rather slow, the interest increases and works up to a very strong climax. Action turns on spiritualistic craze of a husband, who, after a quarrel with his wife, falls asleep in his drawing-room and goes through an amusing mass of experiences with the ‘daughter of Venus’. There are no end of surprises by the beautiful fairy who performs many miracles with her enchanted wand. Interest sustained and laughs frequent, the closing hand big, with curtain call.
Irish Magician and Illusionist. 25 min. F.S. Does not open or close in 1. A very clever man with a fine line of novelties in the magic line, and some stunners in illusion. Could hold any but the star spot in the 2-a-day section. Uses a velvet drop in two during part of his act to arrange set for the illusions which are immense. Line of talk sprightly and amusing, with a little Irish brogue which heightens interest. Act shows long training, the paraphernalia being brilliant and showmanlike. Act includes ‘Miser’s Dream,’ ‘crystal Trunk Mystery,’ and ‘Cremation,’ all excellent and appealing strongly to all parts of the house. A Safe feature.
Two men and woman. 14 min. in 1. Woman and one man work in military costume, the other man in Dutch comedy makeup. Musical work consists of solos and trios on trombones, cornets and bugles. Comedy is shy and jokes antiques for this house. Finishing selection with bugles, khaki costumes, went well and got a big hand. A very good three-a-day act indeed.
Poseurs, Athletes and Champion Strong Men. This one of the best strong-men acts in the business. They are two of the most perfectly developed men that I have seen, and considering that our show was running late and that it is only about eighty-five in the shade here today, they held the audience until close of their act. A very good act of its kind and should make good anywhere. 8 min. Full stage. Carry special curtain for their posing.
Singing and Dancing specialist.
Man and woman. Opened full stage, doing a little rapid fire conversation which falls very flat. He does some baton swinging also plays the guitar very good and gives an imitation of a zither on the guitar which went very well. Ten Min. Full stage. Closes in One five Min. with burlesque imitations and eccentric dances, which received hearty applause. Good opening act, although it looked very doubtful at the start.
For the money I am paying this act I think this is one of the biggest frosts I ever saw, and if I was not made to take it, I would never have played it. 6 minutes, full stage.
