10 mins. Garden. This is one of the best hand balancing and equilibrist acts seen here. Their work is done so quietly and with so little effort that many did not appreciate what they were seeing. Still they received good applause and close the show in good shape (Pictures follow, not proceed this act.)
19 mins. Street in 1. Strong applause on first appearance, and the act was the laughing hit of the bill. While the act is the same all through the last season the audience this afternoon fairly ate it up and the finish was good. They lift the comedy portion of the bill society.
15 mins. Special. While this act seemed to please the house this afternoon there is a sameness all through it that was remarked upon. Four songs with chorus dancing tells the story. The scenic effects were good and there was liberal applause, but several other numbers made a bigger hit. The finish in the rain took well with the house. Personally the act was a disappointment. (Full stage.)
(Coloured) two men and one women. They sing and introduce a little comedy. The straight man has a very pleasing voice and he made good with a ballad which was nicely rendered. The comedy of the other fellow was acceptable. SO far as the woman is concerned she filled in and that was about all. Personally I liked the set but it did not make much of an impression on the audience. 15 minutes in one.
Scene is in an office, and the girls playing on typewriters. They are all good looking and good singers. Mr. Stanley gives his various imitations throughout the sketch all of which were good. Went very well. 24 minutes, full stage and close in one.
In ‘Taming of the Beast.’ Both James A. and Thomas Kiernan are very clever. Miss Cole is good looking, and has a very good voice. I can safely say that this sketch would make good anywhere. Went very well. 18 minutes, full stage and close in one.
This is a fair act. Miss LeClair can’t sing or dance, but the only thing that holds this act up is the Picks. Four picks, two girls and two boys. They are good dancers, and fair singers. The Baton Swinging and Gymnastic work is very good. Went fair. 13 minutes in two. Three shows.
17 min. in 1. 2 shows. On at 9:55. To say that May Irwin was a hit is putting it very mildly. She got an immense advance hand, and for seventeen minutes gave the audience all they had been wishing for, and then some. Sang her while repertoire of songs, and was compelled to give an encore, “The New Billy”. The song, “I’m Afraid to come Home in the Dark” will catch the town before the week is half out. All the hotel orchestras are playing it, helping to popularize it. From May Irwin’s success to-day there is not the slightest doubt of her popularity with Philadelphians. Compared with Lloyd as a money-bringer she is sure to loom up head and shoulders stronger. We are fortunate to have her two weeks, for I believe she will draw better next week than this.
20 min. in 1. 2 shows. On at 8:48. This is one of the most artistic acts of the kind that we have ever played. In fact, it might be called a model for a song and dance trio, full of novelty brilliant in lines, with excellent selection of songs. Girls know how to get the best of out their material, besides making a very fetching appearance in two changes of costume. Act is certainly O.K. for any spot on the bill. Good close, with two curtain calls.
Impersonations & Imitations: 13 min. in 1. 2 shows. On at 8:10. Opened with some excellent Chinese stories which were well received. Followed with imitations of animals and birds, much to the delight of the children. Closed with the auto wreck. Carillo has remarkable imitative talent, and has a pleasing personality.
