10 min in 2. 3 shows. On at 7:30. Aside from the picks there is nothing much to this act. Miss Le Claire is not a beauty, nor dresses very artistically, can neither sing or dance. She is not much more than the coacher of the act. The picks, two boys and two girls, redeem the feature. They sing fairly well and dance cleverly. The baton swinging and gymnastic work helps the act to a good finish. Received fair hand at the close.
Quite a good musical act by four men. They play a number of instruments and play them well. They lack finish and could make a better impression if they livened up a bit. Two of the members seem to be listless and it hurts the act to the eye. Their music will pass muster however. 16 minutes palace.
Two men and one woman. They sing and introduce a little comedy. The straight man has a very pleasing voice and he made good with a ballad which was nicely rendered. The comedy of the other fellow was acceptable. So far as the woman is concerned she filled in and that is about all. Personally I liked the act but it did not make much of an impression on the audience. 15 minutes in one.
17 min. in 1, 2 shows. On at 9:55. To say that May Irwin was a hit is putting it very mildly. She got an immense advance hand, and for seventeen minutes gave the audience all they had been wishing for, and then some. Sang her whole repertoire of songs, and was compelled to give an encore, ‘The New Bully.’ The song, ‘I’m Afraid to Come Home in the Dark’ will catch the town before the week is half out. All the hotel orchestras are playing it, helping to popularize it. From May Irwin’s success to-day there is not the slightest doubt of popularity with Philadelphians. Compared with Lloyd as a money-bringer she is sure to loom up head and shoulders stronger. We are fortunate to have her two weeks, for I believe she will draw better next week than this.
20 min. in 1, 2 shows. On at 8:48. This is one of the more artistic acts of the kind that we have ever played. In a fact, it might be called a model for a sing and dance trio, full of novelty brilliant in lines, with excellent selection of songs. Girls know how to get the best out of their material, besides making a very fetching appearance in two changes of costume. Act is certainly O.K. for any spot on the bill. Good close, with two curtain calls.
Com. Acro. 12 min, F.S. 2 shows. On at 7:58. This is an immense bounding board act. It has the Wotpert Trio beaten at their own game. There is abundance of fun in the act and the bounding-board somersault work is really remarkable. Good comedy also. Constant laughter and applause throughout, and closed with a splendid hand and two curtain calls. A valuable act for any bill.
16 min. in 1. 2 shows. On at 9:32. Advance hand. Monday afternoon and evening did not sing, arriving in Philadelphia very much under the weather. In order to keep faith with the public, however, she appeared in the afternoon, being introduced by Mr. George Abel who made a nice little speech, telling the audience of Miss Lloyd’s indisposition. Miss Lloyd made her apologies and showed very plainly that she was very unwell. The crowd gave her a good strong hand. Tuesday afternoon Miss Lloyd appeared, and although it was plain to be seen that was not up to form, she gave a very good show. In the evening her work was still better and promises to improve for the balance of the week. Lloyd is certainly drawing many to the house.
9 min. F.S. 2 shows. On at 8:41. This is a splendid athletic act. Three men who are expert perform feats that command admiration. Work particularly with the bounding board, and hand-to-hand and head-to-head balancing. Jumping and balancing is remarkably clever and each feat received strong applause. The finish was strong, with two curtain calls. This act could hold a good spot wherever an athletic act is required.
13 min. F.S. Close in 1. 2 shows. On at 8:28. Advance hand. This is a very unconventional act. The countess makes a beautiful appearance in a stunning gown, singing a song, with Mons [sic]. Paulo applauding in the box. He then advances on the stage and sings a couple of duets in a very effective way. The act is decidedly out of the ordinary, but pleased the audience. Gave them a strong hand after each selection and an encore and two curtain calls.
15 min. F.S. 3 shows. On at 7:15. Eight well trained spaniels, terriers, black and tan dogs. Work on a dais two feet above the stage. Very pretty trained animal act. Do regulation stunts of balancing, ball rolling, etc. Some of their feats got a good hand for an act of this kind. Includes a trained goat. Would make a very acceptable opener.
