Parlor pastimes. Hale does some club swinging and hoop rolling fairly well and he is assisted by a boy. The boy gives a xylophone solo very well indeed, and he got a good hand at the close of the act. The act went fairly well. 15 minutes, full stage. Two shows.
Refined singers and dancers. The man has a good voice and is a good dancer. The woman is good looking and is a good dancer and a fair singer. Went very well. 11 minutes in one. Three shows.
12 min. F.S. 2 shows. On at 9:36. Well known on the circuit. One of the best of the European comedy juggling acts being beautifully costumed, swift in action and artistic. Many new feats. There is not an idle moment on the part of any of the performers. Valuable act on any bill. First part of the act went very badly to-day, as they missed constantly, but pulled up later and closed well.
14 min. in 1. 2 shows. On at 9:22. This blackface act consisting of trick piano-playing and eccentric dancing, was a hit. The act is rich in comedy and got the house strong, particularly the dancing which won four curtain calls, and compelled Warren to make a little speech. Good act in one for any spot on the bill where an act in one is [illegible].
21 min, F.S., 2 shows. On at 10:04. Five elephants and a dog, all of them remarkably well trained. A genuine hit. Do regulation stunts and a great many more that are more adapted to a Vaudeville stage than to the Circus, such as putting baby to sleep, working the telephone, etc. The shaving feat is the funniest thing ever, in which one elephant lathers and shaves another in a manner that is ludicrous. This is one of the best animal acts I have ever seen. The closing feat of turning somersault gets a big hand. Also the gun-drill and sword play. As a children’s act this can scarcely be beat.
17 min. in 1. 2 shows. On at 8:50. Alternatively caught on and lost his audience in the afternoon. Some of his jokes were old and others new, but the majority of them got only a mild simmer. The travestie [sic] were good for their kind, but the act did not seem to arouse much applause. Closed with a weak hand. As a single entertainer not in the same class as Willie Weston and cannot be depended upon to hold down a hard spot in a good show. In the evening when he was transferred to a less difficult spot, he won out much stronger.
‘For Love’s Street Sake.’ 25 min. FS, 2 shows. On at 8:25. This is a strong and well written sketch, even if it does not contain the ‘eternal feminine,’ at least not in the living person. The action turns upon a confession of defalcation which the confessor did not commit, in order to shield a fellow-clerk, who had married the girl whom the confessor loved. Thompson’s work is strong, but that of Ince leaves something to be desired in forcefulness. The act commands close attention throughout. Closed with good hand and curtain calls.
Vocal, music & dancing. 17 min. in 1. Close in 3. 3 shows. On at 7:08. Two boys, one a harpist and the other a dancer and a singer. During the first half of the act the younger of the two appears in girl’s costume, which does not deceive anyone, however. Sing solos and duets accompanied by the harp, and get fairly good hand. The harp solos were well received. Closed strong such an act, worthy of a good spot in the three-a-day section.
On at 4.19, 14 min full stage, 3 min close in 1; 17 min in all. An entire change from the old Zingari act. 11 singers, a Spanish dancer and a conductor. As good, if not better than the Romany Company, which means that it is as notable a singing number as we have ever hade in vaudeville. It seems a pity that the probabilities are that this really great organization will have to be disbanded on account of the congestion of bookings.
On at 3.56, 5 min in 1, 18 min in 2; 21 min in all. Much to our delight Miss Lloyd has proven an extremely strong attraction. Our patrons think her the cleverest artiste in her line that has ever been on our stage. She is very easily handled, being extremely anxious to make good. The turn that she is doing for us is as clean as a whistle and I do not think it would be possible for the most prudish person to take exception to any of her lines.
