Jean Marcell’s Picture

Some of the pictures are very good. Others are not so good He has two old ones. One called ‘Angelus’ and the other ‘Morning of Life,’ which on his last visit here was called ‘Spring.’ His picture called ‘Holland Interior’ and ‘Achille’ [sic] are the best of the new ones. In his picture ‘The Volunteers’ and the ‘Call to Arms’ I believe his coloring is bad. I don’t think that these series of pictures, as a whole, are so great. He’s got to do better than that, if he wants to make a success of them. Time 17 minutes stage.

Spook Minstrels

This act is only going fair, and the criticism in the newspapers were not of the best. The singing of the quintette as the finish in one was the best part of the act. Their music arrangement is not made to fit the working of the pictures, and it seems wherever they’ve played they’ve had trouble more or less. It’s utterly impossible for the orchestra and those working the props to keep time with the motion of the pictures. The act needs a thorough going ever before it gets in first-class shape. Time 24 minutes in two, closing 7 minutes in one.

Spook Minstrels

20 minutes in one. This act shows moving pictures of a minstrel first part and carry quintette, a leader and a man to operate picture machine. The music is timed with picture. The people work back of the moving picture drop. They do all the talking for the end man and the interlocutor, in fact give an entire part, lasting 20 minutes. This was a big hit with us and the quintette were compelled to take encore in front of their drop at each performance. This act is a novelty and one which I think draws some money.

Spook Minstrels

2 shows, 20 min in 1. This act has been described in other reports. It made an excellent impression, although it got on nearly half an hour later than scheduled. Men working behind the sheet cannot make themselves distinctly heard in all parts of large house like this, and I think it would be vastly improved if they eliminated the jokes altogether which can easily be done by cutting the film. I am going to suggest this to the manager who is here with it. The signing of ‘My Rosary’ by the quintet at the close was one of the most pronounced hits of the show.

Spook Minstrels

This act consists of five singers who work behind a kinetograph screen on which is shown a minstrel first part. It is one of the best novelties of the current season and goes a long way in showing how the kinetograph can be utilized for vaudeville. While it is still in an embryo state it is strongly recommended. 15 min in one.

Biograph

They gave us a good selection of views this week, the feature of which was a long 7 minute film entitled the “Lifeboat” which is a very striking picture. 18 minutes in one

The Arrival of the Lusitania

The newest and largest ocean greyhound, “Lusitania,” is pictured on her first entrance into this port. The mammoth in followed from near the Battery to her docking, and it makes an interesting series, more especially for houses out of town which could obtain from it an excellent idea of the shipping traffic on the North River. Amusement is brought out in the film by an effect which shows the smaller craft going up and down the river at race horse speed while the big liner is swinging around.

The Derby Race

The incidental scenes leading up to the main event were more appreciated, and the appearance of Richard Croker in an open barouche attested to his lasting popularity by the solid round of applause the fleeting picture received.
