Fred Herbert’s Dogs

GNH 2. Herbert has a splendid act and has been in Europe long enough to learn the art of dressing his stage properly. He ahs a little bit of novelty toward the finish of his act in the way of a loop which a small dog circles on the run. He can, of course, only go around once at a time, but it is quite an effective trick. His leading dogs, as usual, were first class. 11 minutes, full stage.

Melich’s Birds

About twenty-five cockatoos and parrots. A corking good act. The birds do acrobatic and horizontal bar work, ride bicycles, turn somersaults, and do a great deal of other work that is really incredible. An excellent act. Applause throughout. 11 mins. Gar. in 4.

Burton’s Dogs

2 shows, 18 min. full stage. These animals were not working very well today as it was their first appearance since their arrival from Europe. The act has improved much, and now counts among the best of its kind in the varieties. The tumbling and high leaping dogs are as clever as any animals we play.

Mme. Albertine Melich

YRR 2. By all odds as pretty a bird act as we have ever played in the theatre. The birds are all cockatoos and parrots, and the stage setting is, like nearly all European acts, very pretty, and Albertine and her assistant are dressed very nicely. There are not quite so many birds as have been seen in other acts, but aside from that it is a first class act in every respect. 16 minutes, full stage.

Yankee and Dixie

3 shows, 18 min. open full stage, short close in 1. These dogs are Irish terriers who perform a variety of clever tricks, including some real wonderful balancing on the slack wire, and assist their trainer, Mr. Thompson, in a bit of bell playing at the finish. It is a nice little act for an early place in the two show section, and an excellent one, at the salary, for the 3-show section.

The Great Lafayette

Lafayette and his company presented his pantomimical spectacle, ‘The Lion’s Bride.’ While it is the same act that Lafayette has been doing for years, he has an entire new set, new costumes, and it is a really good thing. The act was shown under great disadvantages as the lion refused to go into the cage, and held the curtain nearly five minutes, then later in the act, the inside gates in the cage refused to work which caused the finish to be rather tame. When everything goes properly, however, the act will prove a winner. 17 mins, spec.

Herbert’s Dogs

This is one of the best dog acts in the business from the standpoint of ‘straight’ work but there are as many novelty acts coming into the business the old fashioned dog act is not cared so much for and I think this salary is $25.00 more than it should be also. 12 min. full stage, 2 shows.

Wormwood’s Dogs and Monkeys

This is Wormwood’s old dog and monkey act, and they always make good in this house, being well trained. The monkeys supply quite a lot of comedy. Wormwood is getting very careless. He came in to-day with two green property men, no covers for chairs, stools, and so forth, and as far as his share of the stage setting is concerned, it would not do for the Dime Museum. He should be made [sic] get up to date if he is to play first class theatres. 18 mins. House Gar. In 4.

Herbert’s Dogs

Herbert had hard luck yesterday, and on account of accidents did not reach here in time for the afternoon show. Put part of his act on the supper show, and his whole act at night. Did his full act this afternoon, which was received with frequent applause and laughter. His loop-the-loop dog much better than when here before, and made quite a hit. Mighty good act. 14 mins. Housed Gar. In 4.

Luigi Rossi

2 shows, 14 min. full stage. Quite a clever equine without any mistake. The act was hurt considerably this afternoon by the difficulty of the orchestra to keep in time with the horse. This was Rossi’s fault however, for he was asked to bring in the horse this morning but did not care to do it. Nevertheless, it made quite an impression on the audience and I look for it to go better tonight.
