“The Bally Hoc” – Singing act. They do not sing as well as they did the last time I heard them but made good no doubt for the reason that this is the home town of Lewis. Should term this a fair act and that is about all. Special Set 17 minutes.
Parisian Street Minstrels. The hit of the bill. Their singing and playing went heavily and they were recalled several times. Had I have known that the violinist was as good as he is I would have billed him big and made a feature of him for the town which is very musical. Last night in spite of the fact that the hot weather reduced my audience greatly, he was a terrific hit and they would hardly let him off the stage. Judging from the opening performance this act in going to go unusually well and if I get it again I am going to play it up big. Street 16 minutes.
A very good act consisting of singing, dancing, tumbling, acrobatic work, wall scaling etc. and all of it good. They work fast and got the audience with them at the beginning. They hold them to the end and the act is one of the best to close the show with that we have had since the house opened. Special set. 14 minutes.
German comedians who just about got through with a lot of pool room talk. This line of comedy is not greatly relished here for the reason that generally speaking our patrons are not especially “up” on ponies. For the larger cities I suspect that they may be O.K. but not for Columbus. Not that they failed altogether, but the impression they made was very slight. 18 minutes in one. Special set.
The same old Zonros as of yore who made a big hit but while I think makes a mistake in working too long. He goes great until he begins to sing and his song seems to kill the effect of his good work at the start. It strikes me that he would do better if he would entirely eliminate the singing. 16 minutes in one.
Sketch “Left At The Post.” Assisted by Willard Hutchinsen in a very fair sketch but one that will not make a tremendous hit in this house. Miss Dupont is a very clever woman and she was received favorably but it seems too bad that she has not a better vehicle. The story concerns a young woman who has been disappointed by the non appearance of her “intended” at the church. She returns home and tries to compel a young man who delivers a parcel to her, to wed her. After a lot of comedy work of a fair order, she receives word that the man of her choice has been delayed but is now is at the church. She rushes off to meet him at the finish. 16 minutes C.D.F.
Can’t see what ever made this act a hit for it certainly did not go here. Had it not been for the “blow up” finish of the girls, the act would have been almost an absolute failure. The set stuff for the opening, showing the making up of the girls is about the cheapest looking lot of material that has marred our pretty stage since the house opened. Harry Pilcar got through and that is about all. TO me and also to this afternoon’s house, so far as I could see, there is nothing at all to the act. If the other Wayburn acts that I have not had are as poor as this one, would rather not have them. Special set. 27 minutes.
Comedy singing, dancing, and comedy act. Man and woman. A very fair opening act. The man is a good dancer, and the woman affords him very good support. They have a lot of useless talk and in my opinion the act without the greater part of the conversation would be much better. The man accompanies the woman on the guitar in one song and his work is really out of the ordinary, he displaying an execution that is really remarkable. C.D.F. 15 minutes.
In ‘Under The Sea’ – quite a novel act, the act representing the bottom of the sea, and the characters being a comedy Irishman and a mermaid. – The humor arises through the setting of these widely different beings. – They won several good laughs but were not at one would term a great hit. – To my way of thinking the act is a trifle coarse. – Not the best of language is used. – A great laugh was received on the use of the word ‘Hell’ but this was ordered ‘out’. – An act out of the ordinary but not too refined so far as the work of the man is concerned. – Special act. – 16 minutes.
This act was one put on on the spur of the moment but not the Jay Circus. – Their baggage was lost between here and Chicago, hence they could not give the act in which we expected to see them. – The did very well however with some work and candidly they made a very favorable impression. – The audience was pleased with them and took to them in a way I hardly looked for owing to the fact that people here are decidedly in favor of getting all there is to be had for the money. The Jay Circus will be given tonight and I will get an opportunity to see what it is like. – They did 15 minutes: Exterior.
