Edwin Stevens & Co.

‘A Night Out.’ Man and woman. Here is a very clever gentleman whose work went well from first to last. I think he could have a more capable woman to support him but Miss Marshall is by no means bad. There is not much of a story to the offering but it proves of interest and was well received. 18 minutes, CDF.

The Josetti’s

Acro: 11 min. F.S. On at 9:40. This is a truly great acrobatic act from every standpoint. It was an instant winner. Everyone of the performers is a trained athlete and shows life-long acquaintance with the business. The feats on the living pedestal get immense applause. The finish was one of the strongest ever awarded an act of this kind in this house.

Jean Clermont’s Circus

18 min. F.S. at 9:02. This is a decided novelty and an excellent children’s feature, highly grotesque, and the animals work remarkably well. The manner in which Clermont dresses them up and makes them perform is very amusing and they seem to work willingly, without fear of the whip, which spoils so many animal acts. There are four ponies, three dogs, two roosters, beside some comedy supes [sic]. There is one dog that plays a bell-piano astonishingly well, and brought down the house. The act ought to draw very well with the little people. Close was very good with burlesque procession, and two curtain calls. Placing this act in the body of the bil is its saving, as the audience is not too tired to enjoy the nonsense.

Kennedy & Rooney

“The Happy Medium”: 23 min. F.S. Close in 1. On at 7:54. This act did not catch on after the good things gone before and had to be shifted up several pegs. In fact, it was right up to the finish before it really got the crowd. There is a lack of coherency in the act and the comedy is forced and often far-fetched. The dancing, trick piano playing and singing are not up to the standard. The girl appears in two changes of costume, but has no singing voice and relies on her sprightly dancing and repartee to please. The close in one was only fairly strong and the finishing hand likewise.

Fred Zobedie

Equil: 10 min. On at 7:33. This is in many ways a sensation. Zobedie works on a brass pedestal, spiral stair-case, and other paraphernalia. The feats are of the most difficult ever seen her and received continued applause throughout. His closing feat, turning flip-flops on the pedestal while being slowly drawn off the stage got one of the best hands I have ever heard in this house for an athletic act.

Matthews & Ashley

These boys had a hard time getting things to coming right but finally did. The ‘dope’ character is one that the people here are not especially familiar with and I am certain that many failed to appreciate the effort on this account. Finally the boys got things coming right and they finished fairly strong but not to the extent I hoped they would. 20 minutes in one.

Marcels Art Studies

Really wonderful act and one that had me puzzled for a while to figure out just what the audience thought of it. They seemed to like the pictures but do not make any particular demonstration over them. Whether they were too surprised to make themselves heard or whether they did not care so much for the act was a question until near the end when they warmed up and seemed to catch the spirit of the offering. This is certainly a beautiful act and it should create lots of comment and draw.

Leon Rogee

Imitates musical instruments then finishes with some whistling. The early part of the act just got by but his whistle work pulled him out nicely and he got away much stronger that I thought he would early in his work. 10 minutes Olio.

Whittle

A ventriloquist and a very good one.  Judging from the way he went this afternoon, he is the best hit for his kind of an act the house has had excepting Tom Edwards only.  He made a good impression the minute he came in sight and he held them without any trouble all the way through.  Took three bows at the finish.  14 minutes.  Special set.

Hassen Ben Ali Troupe

Arab acrobatic act that I believe to be the best we have had. It went O.K. but I think suffered for the reason that it came too soon after some of the same style we have had. Their work is excellent but did not seem to make the impression that the earlier ones have. This is no doubt owing to the fact that the routine of these acts is practically the same and the audience was familiar with what was coming. They finished well enough and there is no fault to find with the act itself. 8 minutes, garden.
