The travesty, “Dick Whittington,” is supposed to take place in a room in the house of some person or other, evidently an actress. A box arrives and the servants (The Whittakers) discover costumes for a “Dick Whittington” character and the covering of a cat. They decide to try some acting themselves, retiring behind a screen to change. The woman who impersonated “Dick Whittington” wisely reclines on a sofa, while her partner offers his specialty.
The Whittakers received more than the usual quantity of applause given an opener.
Up until the change of costume, the actors failed to show anything promising. But immediately when the man came out as a cat, the American success of the Whittakers was assured. The change of character was rather swift and did not lessen the action.
