On at 7.30, 9 min, in 1; 3 shows. This act is as good value for the money as anything I know of. On my recommendation they are prepared to work in 1, and can hold a position as good as three or four anywhere. Their ability to do their act in 1 adds greatly to their value, to my mind, as anything in 1 that breaks away from the usual singers, dancers or monologists is thoroughly appreciated by our audiences. I hope it will be possible to give these boys a blanket contract for next season.
On at 7.18, 12 min, in 1; 3 shows. Lillian’s voice is anything but flute-like. She makes a neat appearance. I have my doubt about her holding the number two spot satisfactorily in the 3-a-day houses.
One-act comedy by Mr. H. Beerbohm Tree, entitled, “We Shall Meet Again”. Without a doubt this has been the best thing Mr Glaser has done. It is a very pretty little comedy and no doubt will please audiences a good deal more than his other two sketches. 3 people. 19 minutes. Interior.
Violiniste. This young lady is one of the Zingari Troupe, with which she makes quite good, but is far from being strong enough to play solos, especially in this spot. Played two numbers very poorly. 8 minutes in one.
In an Operatic Novelty, entitled “Gypsy Life”. This act to my mind is one of the best acts we have had in Cleveland this season. It is not only staged very pretty but has the best aggregation of singers we have had. Their solos, quartettes and duettes were very artistically rendered. Received three curtain calls at close and had to sing an encore. Special set. 15 minutes. Close in one 4 minutes.
First act on the bill that really got any applause. Comparing this man and the price with Jewell’s, it could be cleaned as a better act. Received applause throughout with fairly good hand on the finish. 16 min
Man and woman, in a Roman travesty, “An Ancient Roman” This act has greatly weakened without Elle Garrison. Does not contain the laughs. Act proved a dismal failure this afternoon. Left the stage with barely any applause whatever. At the night performance it improved a little. Presume by the end of the week it will develop into an act. 16 min
Colored Entertainers. Men dressed as messenger boy. Both have fairly good voices. Comedy does not amount to much. Finish of the act is on the style of Greene & Werner. Just about got by in this place. 18 min. in one.
This act was one put on on the spur of the moment but not the Jay Circus. – Their baggage was lost between here and Chicago, hence they could not give the act in which we expected to see them. – The did very well however with some work and candidly they made a very favorable impression. – The audience was pleased with them and took to them in a way I hardly looked for owing to the fact that people here are decidedly in favor of getting all there is to be had for the money. The Jay Circus will be given tonight and I will get an opportunity to see what it is like. – They did 15 minutes: Exterior.
Many and woman: The former extracts quite a bit of laughter by breaking up a lot of china and the latter does some very ordinary juggling. — Decidedly not a pretty act to the eye and one that makes but a fairly favorable impression. – 14 minutes C.D.F.
