City Girls

We had a good house this afternoon and I think Truly Shattuck and the City Girls are to blame for it. When their number was announced the people began to sit up and take notice. Received advance applause. The act went very well indeed. I was very much amused when the Philadelphia Girl sang ‘Bye, bye, let me sleep.’ The girls are all very pretty and handsomely gowned and each can dance and sing. The audience seemed thoroughly pleased. Palace in 5. 19 minutes.

A.O. Duncan

Ventriloquist. This man keeps up to date and uses a lot of local stuff. However, it is a strange coincidence that the ventriolquists seem to be traveling in bunches. This man can hardly attempt to follow Ed. Reynard, bit that Reynard is a better ventriloquist, but that Reynard had a great deal better stage setting and a great deal of novelty in his act. Duncan got quite a good many laughs today and went well. CDF in 3, close in one. 17 minutes. Cut out ‘more fish.’

Basque Quartet

2 shows, 13 min. in 1. Three men and a woman. Good vocalists, but I believe of they gave us less of the heavy selections, it would be much to their advantage. All of their songs were encored, however, but not to the pitch they should be. Their last selection carried them off to a good hand and it was a life saver.

Thomas and Paine

3 shows, 18 min in 1. Man and woman, ‘real coon’ singer and dancers. As with the majority of acts of this order, their dancing is the real merit. While it makes fair act, there is not enough of the ‘eccentric’ style to be able to play them down as we can other acts of the same kind.

Bros. Durant

Acrobatic novelty. First American appearance. Open in two in an airship. They carry their own drop, representing tops of houses. One works straight while the other impersonates a clown. Received quite a number of laughs for the comedy while in the airship. They change to full stage, showing a single trapeze on which one of the brothers does some good gymnastic work. The act is nothing sensational, but they are foreigners, the opening is novel, therefore, it is a mighty valuable three-show act and alright for an early place and for re-booking. 19 min, full stage, 3 shows.

Agusta Glose

Musical pianologue. Got the audience on the start-off with her piano work. Imitation of the child went very strong with her character impersonation. This woman is greatly overpaid. Think $125.00 is about enough. (Closed in one about 5 minutes) drapery in two. 16 min, 2 shows.

Leo Carrillo

Mimic. This man makes a very nice appearance, and with a pleasing manner, gets his audience on the start-off. His Chinese stories and impersonations were very well received. Some of his mimic work is old, although he being a new face, passed in great shape. Very acceptable for three-show section and fully capable of going down further in the bill. 14 min. in one, 3 shows.

Edward Mollenhauer

Veteran violinist. I had the old gentleman up to my house last night picking out a program and was surprised to see how far back he had gone as a violinist and was all last night and today very apprehensive to his success; however much to my surprise he made a decided hit. Got a big reception on his entrance, due in some part I believe to our method of working him up; got great applause on each of his three selections and was forced to come back and play another occupying in all about twenty minutes time. We have had better violinists on the circuit but in view of the way he went today I feel sure that no mistake was made in booking him and that he will draw good money if properly handled. I will cut his act down to about 15 min., 2 shows in 3, using a Grand Piano.

Zena Keife

This is a little child whom I have had playing in Pawtucket for me and who is introducing her specialty here. She has a charming personality, quite small, appears to be about eight years old although she was ten, and has lots of ability. To my mind it is a decidedly more desirable an act than that of La Petite Mignon. This little girl does singing, dancing and whistling. 13 min. in 1, 2 shows.

Asra

Novelty juggler. His opening work amounts to very little. I was afraid he was going to be a failure but when he got on to his ‘billiard table’ to work introduced there being of a novel nature and quite well done, was accepted in an appreciated manner. Although not ‘great’ it is a good act. 13 min. full stage, 2 shows.
