‘Real Coons,’ two men and a woman, good singers and dancers, rather snappy, plenty of ginger, with some good comedy, fully able to go down a little further. Three shows, street in one, 16 minutes.
This act is only going fair, and the criticism in the newspapers were not of the best. The singing of the quintette as the finish in one was the best part of the act. Their music arrangement is not made to fit the working of the pictures, and it seems wherever they’ve played they’ve had trouble more or less. It’s utterly impossible for the orchestra and those working the props to keep time with the motion of the pictures. The act needs a thorough going ever before it gets in first-class shape. Time 24 minutes in two, closing 7 minutes in one.
This excellent and actor who has just closed as leading man with Henrietta Crossman went very strong with his monologue. He held the full stage 17 minutes and closed in one 10 minutes which I consider is too long for any monologue turn.
Four men and four women in a whirlwind dance that is very good, as it is life, dash and color every minute it holds the stage. While these acts as a rule do not make good here this one appears to have caught the fancy of the audiences. 10 mins, FS.
It would indeed be a very nervy writer who would attempt to critise this artist. What he does is done perfectly and while his material may not appeal to the unintelligent theatre-goer he made an instant and emphatic hit with our audience. He was recalled repeatedly at both performances on Monday and a splendid week’s business is assured. Nothing in his line has ever been seen here before and he is drawing the very best people in the city, although the larger part of the audience is always made up of this class. A return date of this man some months from now, say in the fall would bring very big returns, works in one 24 minutes.
Written by Mrs. V. Mott Pierce, daughter-in-law to Dr. R.V. Pierce the famous patient medicine man. Mrs. Pierce being a resident of Buffalo the sketch is one of unusual local interest but at the same time carries considerable merit as well as being artistic. Mrs. Pierce has gone to the expense of special scenery and light effects which are as beautiful as anything ever seen in vaudeville. There are three people in the act, one and [sic] indian [sic], one a cowboy, and one a supposedly indian [sic] maid who afterwards turns out to be a white girl. Miss Young who plays the maid is a sister of Mrs. Pierce and Mr. Fred House who plays the cowboy is Miss Young’s husband. Mr. House closed with the Providence Stock Co. to open here with this sketch. The idea of the act is entirely different from any other and it is well played. I believe it would make a good attraction in any theatre whether Mrs. Pierce was known there or not, full stage 18 minutes.
I think this act will draw money and to me it is the most mysterious thing in the way of illusions that I have ever seen. The ‘creation’ of the first woman leaves one a little disappointed but the second one adds material strength to the act and is bound to make talk. 11 min. full stage, 2 shows.
In a rural sketch. This act was distinct disappointment. Disappointing in the sketch itself, which is a very poor one to my mind and disappointing in Boyd’s acting, which from a man with a lesser reputation would not be considered for two minutes. There are dozens of men getting forty dollars a week who could play the part much better than he did. 23 min, full stage, 2 shows.
I feel quite sure that this act will draw some money from the older generation and from the musical people, but can’t see it however from any other standpoint. It is not a good vaudeville act and our blasé Monday crowd were very restless during it. It is only good to play once. He did 27 minutes in this show, but I should cut it down to 20. Can work in two, 2 shows.
‘Musical Barbers.’ This act is quite a little bit of novelty. They play upon the various utensils used in a Barber Shop and get some pretty good music from them. Exceptionally good from a three a day standpoint. 15 min. open in 3, can close in one, 3 shows.
