This prima donna was handicapped at the two opening performances through the loss of her wardrobe trunks, but she borrowed a dress from Kathryn Osterman and got through with flying colors. Miss Simpson sings in her old-time voice and will draw considerable money. 10 min, with the plush and a piano.
2 shows, 25 min. full stage. In his latest and best play, ‘As a Man Sows.’ The usual enough theme of the villain, the husband and wife, but remarkably well worked up. Little June Pelton occupies a more prominent position than in any of the other plays Hilliard has presented and captivates the audience with her clever acting. A tremendous hit, forced to respond to five enthusiastic curtain calls. If it were possible, I would hold him for another week.
3 shows, 15 min in 1. Two men and a woman, in operatic and popular selections. Put these people in here for time to set Hilliard and they held down the position quite creditably, although they can only be considered fair vocalists. All right for this sort of act for the 3-a-day division.
2 shows, 17 min in 1. ‘Comedian-at-large,’ in songs and sayings. A most difficult spot for a single entertainer of his order and he just about managed to hold it this afternoon, although he secured scattering laughs all through, Cut ‘losing flesh rapidly.’
Three men and a woman, in a comedy cycle act. Clever trick riding, good comedy. New property man in this act, would give one the impression they were breaking the act in here, it is however an excellent act, with plenty of laughs and big applause throughout. Twenty minutes, full stage, two shows.
Monologuist [sic] and mimic. This man’s voice is failing and he looks to me as though he was going backwards. His material is new and received some scattered laughs, but closed very weak. Fifteen minutes, in one, two shows.
Presenting the playlet ‘The Imposter.’ Both Duryea and Mortimer are excellent. The business and situations of the comedy carry it and they score a big lot laughs. Received two curtain calls on the finish. Twenty-one full stage, two shows.
Novel Electric musical comedy. One works straight and the other black face. The scene represents a garden in Florida, with colored incandescent lamps for light effects. The comedian is bad and the other can’t talk. The musical end of it is only fair. Will have them cut the comedy and work straight. Eighteen minutes, full stage, three shows.
Man and woman, in a talking and singing comedy. First time for this act in year, seem like new faces. Have a lot of good material, which secured a number of laughs, and pleased immensely. Alright for an early place. Seventeen minutes in one, three shows.
Man and woman, in a yankee comedy, talking, singing and dancing act. Material very dull, singing and dancing only fair, which just about lets them out. Fifteen minutes, full stage, three shows.
