Assisted by the Sharp Boys. Black face singing and dancing act, with special plantation scenery. While this is a good act it didn’t have a chance on earth following the Williams and Walker Glee Club. The two acts should never have been placed one to follow the other on any bill. They conflict and that does not express the half of it. In the night show I will split them by four acts. Leonard has a good act, one that would stand on its own merits on any bill, but he was unfortunate in being made to follow the best colored vocal act I ever heard. The dancing of the Sharp boys was liberally applauded. Special set in 4, close in one. 17 minutes.
Fifteen colored gentlemen working in dress suits. Double septette and the director. One of the best vocal acts I have ever heard in vaudeville. Made a pronounced hit this afternoon. Very good act. Palace in 5, close in one. 19 minutes. Took four curtain calls.
Rochez gave us something entirely different in the way of a dog and pony act to-day than we have had in the past, the dogs and ponies working together. The animals are exceedingly well trained, and form the tableaus, and do the little plays practically of their own volition. A mighty good act, not only for the children, but for the older ones. The only adverse criticism that might be offered is that it lacks action. Held the attention to-day and was liberally applauded. 13 mins, circus in 5.
This well known talking team came in with all new songs, and new repartee, most of which is very bright and pleasing. The scored lots of laughs, but their song at the close did not seem to meet with popular favor, and they received a very small hand, not enough to bring them back for an encore song. They have a good act, however, and will undoubtedly rearrange their material, so as to go better to-night. 17 mins, St. in 1.
Man and woman in a little more singing, and a little more dancing, also a little dialogue. The act is well dressed, but the women’s personality is bad, and the material is very old. Failed to do anything with the matinee crowds until they introduced one of Kelly & Violette’s songs, which they reproduced absolutely line for line, and action for action, bringing out quite a lot of applause. In justice to Kelly & Violette will be compelled to use this act as an opener. 13 mins. in 1.
2 men and 2 women. In their well known theatrical burlesque. ‘From Zaza’ to ‘Uncle Tom.’ Received some advance applause. Act did not go as strong as on other occasions due to the frappe condition of the audience. Presume it will go better to-night. 25 min. open in one-close in full stage.
3 men and a woman. In their well known juggling act. I think from the novelty standpoint, the edge is worn off. Act is nicely dressed and they managed to secure numerous laughs throughout. Got a big strong hand for the plate-throwing on the finish. 19 min, full stage, 2 shows.
First American Appearance. Only has four dogs. Act consists of balancing and I believe one of the best acts of this kind we ever had. While they were not enthusiastic over the work of the dogs, I believe it was greatly appreciated. He, however, received a big lot of applause on the finish. 10 min in two, 2 shows.
2 men. In their comedy: ‘Matrimonial Agent.’ One portrays the characters of a rube, while the other one works straight and then changes to a maid. Received some few scattered laughs. This is not a bad act. Just about gets by. 15 min. full stage.
This famous woman presented several impersonations of famous stage celebrities, and sang three songs. She was very nervous at the opening matinee but the evening performance she finished strong. There is no question as to her drawing powers and there is no question as to her pleasing the better element of our audience.
