Sidney Wilmer and Co

20 min. full stage – Presenting for the second time here a farce entitled, “A Thief of the Night”. It went fairly well, though I can imagine it being a tremendous laughing hit if the actor playing the part enacted by Woodney, Mr. Wilmer, who is, without exception, the most irritating individual whom I know who persists in thinking himself a comedian. His support was so much better than Wilmer’s shortcomings stood out by contrast.

McMahon’s Watermelon Girls

Composed of eight women and two men. They are all good dancers and singers and work exceedingly well together. Several changes of costume are made and all of the scenery that is used in the act is carried for the production. The turn is a splendid one and worthy of being the feature of any bill. 11 minutes full stage.

Hampton and Co.

Presenting the skit entitled “The Melodrama.” One of the best things in the one-act vehicle line that is being offered to the public. Miss Hampton is being supported by two men, one of whom is an A1 violinist. The acting of both the star and her support is all that the most critical could desire. A big hit. 27 minutes full stage.

Mr. Wynne Winslow

A soprano singer who has a fairly good voice, dresses well, is shapely and rather pretty. With these points in her favor it is difficult to reason why she does not go bigger than she does in this house, unless it is that she lacks personal magnetism and has a repertoire of song members that is not up to the standard. 9 minutes in 1.

McMahon’s Watermelon Girls

This is the second week for this splendid act and it is going big. Instead of the Mississippi river scene (illuminated steamboat) employed last week, a drop showing a passenger train (illuminated) is used. It is a pretty picture and gets a big hand. The act is A1 and a winner in every respect. 12 minutes full stage.

McIntyre and Heath

Black faced comedians in a new act which they call “Dr. Lorenzobreakabones.” It is a conglomeration of two or three old negro acts, but put together in the inimitable style in which these two artists always present everything. I think it is about the strongest act they have ever given us. At any rate, I have been watching these people for the last fifteen years, and I never heard an audience laugh heartier than they did this afternoon. 32 minutes, full stage.

Chas. Dickson and Co.

Including Mr. Dickson, a lady, and a young boy, in a sketch entitled “Heart-to-heart Talks.” The sketch is constructed in order that it may fit Mr. Dickson’s peculiar style of work, and while it is a pretty good act, I think he has done many better ones on the circuit. He had a new woman here this afternoon, who, while she played the part excellently, was unquestionably nervous, and that might have affected Mr. Dickson in a way. The act went all right, but somehow it did not seem to me to quite meet the criticisms that I have heard of it. However, it is liable to be much better tonight. At any rate, it is hardly fair to judge from a Monday afternoon audience. 33 minutes, full stage.

Lawson and Namon

This is a man and a woman, the man doing a comedy bicycle act, and the woman a bag punching specialty. I don’t think that our audiences care particularly for bag punching at any stage of the game, for I don’t think they fairly understand it, but I should say this woman is about as good as any of them, and the man is a very clever bicyclist. There is an element of novelty about the act which makes it good. 14 minutes, full stage.

The Althea Twin Sisters

This is a singing, dancing, and acrobatic act of about the same calibre [sic] of the usual “sister” teams. It is no better nor no worse than the average act of the kind, and, while I have never thought that our audiences cared particularly for this sort of an act, it is all right once in a while. 9 min., full stage.

Zara and Stetson

A man and a woman in an exhibition of baton juggling. There is not, of course, in an act of this kind, an opportunity to show a great deal of versatility. It is simply one thing right over and over, but I think they are about the best in this line that I have ever seen, and they do a very good small act which will give satisfaction in an early part of the bill. 10 minutes, full stage.
