Kid juggler: this is really one of the best opening acts that we have had in many a day. This young fellow makes up as a “rube” kid, and while his actual juggling is only about the same as the ordinary performer in this line, he is so good-natured about his work that he wins the audience from the start, and he makes a lot of fun by having people in the audience throw apples which he catches on a fork. An exceptionally good3-show-a day act. 12 minutes; full stage; close in 1.
two women who work in one. They appeared this afternoon in stunning gowns, but opened their conversation with reference to cheese sandwiches, etc. and fully 30 people a rose and left the theater. However, after they got started they made good, held their audience, and were literally applauded.
Jake and Jane in the German comedy sketch. Jake endeavors to imitate Sam’s make up and succeeds very well, but he is not in Sam’s class at any stage of the game as a real comedian. The act went very well this afternoon.
a child who sings rag-time and indulges in toe-dancing; toe-dancing is fair, but she should get another set of songs – nothing very offensive, but she sings a “drunk” song which is not very appropriate for a child of her age.
Two men, billed as comedians. They hardly had a fair chance, as the curtain went up before 20 people had entered the house. They ended up with the “Ramble” song which Eddie Girard saying here all last week. As Cole & Johnson are singing this song and are presenting it in much better form it has been cut out of this act.
a very novel and pleasing act. The principal thing in the show that I can depend upon to draw some money. 14 min, full stage, 2 shows.
A colored team. Are quite good, but did not make a very big hit, due, I think, to the fact, that we have had about all the very good acts of this kind in ahead of them this season. 12 min. in one, 3 shows.
in the same act they have been doing for the past two seasons, “The Fire Chief”. This act goes very well, in fact, made quite a hit this afternoon, still I cannot help but feel that the act is also over-paid about $50. Carry their own senery [sic]. 23 min. in three, 2 shows.
while these people were never strong here they are much weaker this time than ever before, although I like the sketch which they are playing, fully as well as the old ones, as it gives Mrs. Ellis, who is now the most important member of the team better opportunities. Ellis’s voice, which was formerly the best thing in the act, is now completely gone. I would consider the act well paid at one half the money.18 min. full stage, 2 shows.
this act is something of a disappointment, as from what had been said of her as an oratorio singer, I had been led to look for a much better voice. She sings fairly well, and changes of costume lends a little novelty to the act, which maybe classed as fairly good. 11 min. in on, 3 shows.
