Yyh-2. Vocalist and comedian, working in white face. He went very strong this afternoon, and held up the interest at the last end of the bill in good shape. My first impression was, that I was not going to like him in white face, but he seemed to go just as strong as he ever did in black, and I am going to let him continue that way, at least until I look him over again. 15 minutes, in one.
YYH-2. In an act entitled “Her Last Rehearsal”. This act is presented by two men and a woman, and is given on a bare stage with the walls showing, also the props and furniture. It is supposed to be a rehearsal conducted by an erratic stage manager, and the situations are really funny, all three of the people are clever and the act went with howls of laughter. 30 minutes. Full stage.
MRR-2. Another novelty act and a good one. Two Burmese men introducing some really remarkable juggling work. They use first a bamboo ball and close with glass ones. The latter part of their act is simply marvelous. I do not think the audience fairly appreciates the difficulty of it but they held them to the finish of the act and got a good strong round of applause at the end. 12 minutes. Full stage.
Man and woman in an act introducing experiments with electricity. It is about the same sort of act that they did in this country about five years ago, but is valuable because it is a novelty. They introduce several new effects in it and the audience was deeply interested from start to finish. 23 minutes. Full stage
Man and woman in a musical act. They use nothing but cornets, bugles and post-horns, and introduce a little singing. The singing does not amount to very much, but there is an element of novelty in the musical portion and they make three changes of costume. Good act throughout. 15 minutes. Full stage, close in one.
2 shows. 20 min. in one. Blackface musical comedian. Did not go so strong as he has during previous engagements, due, I think, to the fact that his opening was made with moss-covered jokes. He got considerable applause for his banjo playing, and, of course, finished with the bells, making a hit.
2 shows. 23 min. open full stage. Close in one. Appearing in “Examination Day at School” a skit they have been using for the last two seasons. Make a laughing hit, for Leach is a decidedly clever and original eccentric comedian, and it would require more than the trio of girls that cannot sing to kill the act. It wins on its comedy, and not on the musical numbers. The laughing hit of the show by all odds.
3 shows. 10 min. in one. Baritone singer with a really phenomenal voice. I believe, however, that the audience really thought it was a man made up as a woman, for they did not appreciate her as she deserved. She has not a good stage presence, which is considerable of a drawback.
3 shows. 12 min. in one. Hebrew vocalist and mimic. He is a very good singer, and his impersonation of Joe Welch quite life-like. He hardly got applause enough, however, to warrant his returning after each selection, due to the fact that the audiences in his house do not understand or appreciate the type of character impersonated by him.
3 shows. 14 min. full stage. A very pretty, artistic “sight” act. The smoke and sand pictures are interesting, and the shadowgraphs at the finish are amusing, especially to the juvenile patrons. In its class, it ranks with the best three-show acts in the business.
