A young lady who does a turn of songs with a little comedy talking on the side. I agree with Boston that the young lady has quite a good line of material, but she lacks animation. It is a pretty good act, but will undoubtedly be much better in the future. 10 minutes in one.
15 min. in 1 – Talking and singing comedians, who had a stiff place following McIntyre and Heath, but I could not figure out any other way of placing them. They went quite strong finishing with a good parody on the “Thee Bamboo Trees”. I cut that portion of their opening song in which the coffin full of cheese is mistaken for the remains of a mother-in-law, as I consider that it grates too much on the sensibilities of the nice people in the audience.
13 min. open in 3, close in 1 – This was a team which I was to have given a place in the show tomorrow to try them … The woman was an understudy of Lelia McIntyre, in “Beauty and the Beast”, and the man had had some experience in the same company. Their comedy was bad and the singing not quite fair, so concluded one performance was enough to inflict on our audience.
Miss Fay made quite a hit with her Avenue A song, which, although pretty rough, she managed to keep down at least in our house sufficiently to not make it offensive. Her “muggings” and her exaggerated walk seemed to impress the audience as extremely funny, and I think she is going to make a big hit at night. 11 minutes in one.
Special in four, 17 minutes in “A Day in Camp”. Good act with considerable singing, acrobatics, and clowning.
16 min. in one. This man is a good entertainer. His dialects include French, Italian, Swedish, coon and German. Songs and jokes went very well, but he is not in the Holmes’ class. Closed fair.
13 mins. In One. A good selection of songs, finishing with their imitations of well known singing comedian. A hit.
27 mins. – Spec. in 2 and cyc. In 3 – A reception on her entrance. A series of character songs that are classics. Her inimitable rendition of each number was rewarded with generous applause. Her comedy was greeted with hearty laughter. After her “My Man” number she was obliged to do encores and even then the audience was loathe to lot her go.
17 mins. – Drapery in One – Songs and stories. His vocal numbers were well received; his stories made ‘em laugh.
“After the Game.” 20 min. in one. The well known catcher of the Phillies and the probable manager, assisted by James McCool, the well known Philadelphia minstrel. From a singing standpoint alone, the act is all right. Dooin has a very god voice, while McCool is undoubtedly one of the best singers of Irish songs we have ever had on our stage. The way the act is put together, it gives opportunity for quite some laughs on the strength of Dooin’s ball-playing. The act was extremely well received, big applause for each number and closed strong. From a box office attraction, it is certainly a winner, as our house this afternoon was absolute capacity and there is no question but what Charlie Dooin was a drawing card.
