“The Siren”
Lola Merrill & Frank Otto
In 1. Time 19. Song and dance skit call, “After the Shower.” Neat and bright work throughout. The girl is very pretty and clever.
Gardiner & Vincent & Co.
In “Shanghaied.” 6 people. This is their new offering and it went even better than their act of last season. It is constructed on similar lines to their old act and when it is running a little smoother will prove good amusement. They introduce a little of everything including some grand opera music at the finish. Several quick changes of scenery during the presentation of the act. Own set, full stage. Close in 1, 6 min. time 24 min.
McBride, Purcell & Skelley
In “Life on an Ocean Way.” Called a nautical skit whatever that is. Carry a special act and sing several songs, pull a few gags and so some excellent dancing. The storm effect at the finish could be well eliminated and almost the entire act done in 1, except the opening. Own set in 4. Time 28 min.
Rober & Tunison
“A Bit of Musical Caviar.” Man and woman in a very pleasing singing sketch. Both have good voices and a good routine of songs, closing with a grand opera travesty that went well. Did a 5 min close in 1 tonight which helped out. C.Fcy in 3. Time 14 min.
Boyd Marshall & Katherine Bell
Playlet “Wall Between.” Very interesting, well played. Miss Bell and Mr. Marshall both very good. Mr. Marshall has a very fine baritone voice, his solos made a big hit. Act went very good. 18 min. in one. Own set.
“College Life”
This is my latest vaudeville production and I dislike very much to report upon it myself, but will endeavor to be fair to all concerned. I think it is a decided novelty for vaudeville, containing as it does sixteen men and two women. The scene represents the Campus of the College and has been spoken of in a most complimentary manner. The principal characters show a number of types of college boys, one pretty girl and the other eccentric, back by ten College students. There is quite a lot of comedy. There are five musical numbers beside the College Glees that close the act, all five going well and two of them being big hits. A dance by Miss Courtney scoring very heavy in addition. The College Glees at the end finish the act to a perfect whirlwind of applause and, despite the fact that the act ran forty minutes, they took five encores and several curtain calls (not forced) at each of the three performances so far given. Altho running forty-minutes, it doesn’t seem long, and, unless it is really demanded by the managers, I would rather not cut it any further. In spite of its length the audience evidently wanted more. The material of the act is so kaleidoscopic and there is such a general change and so much action every few minutes that the act seems much shorter than it really is. I would be quite pleased if a committee of censors would come down and see the act.
Chas. Murray & Co.
Old style vaudeville sketch, in which Murray assumes three characters and does a little singing and dancing. Murray himself is clever, the lady fair. The vehicle is hardly up to date. 17 Min. F.S.
Bayes & Norworth
44 min. F.S. close in one. Advance applause. Begin with their revival of old-time minstrels which went well. Proceeded to their original work which went stronger and stronger up to a great finish with several encores and a little chaffing on their matrimonial felicity. Bayes & Norwoth are great favorites as is evidenced by the immense crowd and the enthusiasm this afternoon. They will undoubtedly draw big this week, as big as any card in vaudeville of the comedy class.
