Rose DeHaven Sextette

Among the big acts this is the poorest that we have this week. From the standpoint of its salary it is beyond all reason. It would be fairly paid at $200 less. I will admit that it is beautifully dressed and the girls with the exception of Rose DeHaven, are good looking, but about there, the act stops. The applause was very piano. 22 min. full stage, 2 shows.

Hanson and Nelson

Their first appearance in this house, and they fairly well.  I consider them clever girls and was much surprised that they did not score more heavily.  They are full of life and there isn’t a dull moment in their act.  Still, their finish was weak, with not enough applause to even steal a boy.  However, I think it wise to charge part of their non-success to an audience that had not got warmed up.  I would not be afraid to put them on at 3 and 8:40, for I think they would do better further down the bill than in the sport they had today.

The Rose DeHaven Sextette

In a Dancing Operetta ‘The Understudy.’ Miss DeHaven is very clever, and she is assisted by five good looking girls. They make about six changes of costume all of them are very pretty. The girls are good singers and excellent dancers. Went very well. 21 minutes, full stage.

Joseph Hart’s “Rain-Dears”

Eight pretty girls and Miss Louise Montrece.  Time 14.  Open in 2 close F.S.  Four scenes.  This is far and away the best “girl act” we have had for a long time, and we have had a lot lately.  The girls are all good looking and Miss Montrose makes a good leader.  The costumes are pretty and unusual and the eccentric dancing is very attractive.  The close with girls in heavy rain coats and rubber coats while the “real” rain is falling on them scores heavily with the audience.  Three encores.  The big hit of the show.

Edward Clark and His Winning Widows

Six girls and Clark, F.S., special back drop. Time 24 min. Some fast and entertaining work, but entirely too long for the material. Songs, dances and some race track talk including Mr. Clark’s ‘The Piker.’ The audiences appeared to like the act, although it is pretty tame, and offers little originality. Close in one.

Pullman Porter Maids

The strongest part of this number is the McMahon & Chappelle Specialty in one which proved to be the strongest laughing number of the bill. Too much sameness between the Watermelon Girls and the Pullman Porter Maids. The audience seemed to like it and gave them little applause. 24 minutes.

‘The Human Flags.’

This act calls for the billing to read ’17 Human Flags – 17.’ As there are but 12 girls in the act I refused to bill as instructed. While the act is a very good one I am of the opinion that it has depreciated a great deal since its last presentation here. Mr. Bryan’s successor is fully as good as the original but the girls do not present as wholesome an appearance, and there are but very few of the original girls in the act. I am of the opinion that their season in burlesque has had a bad effect on their discipline. 15 min, FS. Open in one about 3 minutes.

Rose DeHaven Septette

Just a ‘girl act.’ – Aside from the hard show dancing finish and the piano playing of Miss DeHaves the act was among ‘and others.’ – Nothing especially wrong about the act – simply in a town where the best girl acts in the business are worth about $100.00 per week to us. – It looked like a distinch [sic] fall down until the finish but they finally won out and saved themselves. – Personally I think the act is good of its kind but patrons here don’t seem to care for this style of offerings. Garden 26 minutes.

Delight Barsch and the Broomstick Witches

14 min, FS, 2 shows. One of the prettiest girl-acts we have had. There are eight girls besides Miss Barsch. All make fine appearance in Japanese costume. The girls are pretty and the two changes of costume all that could be desired of such an act. Miss Barsch herself is very stunning girl, with a personality which took from the start. She sings with good taste and quite won the house. In fact, the last feature, ‘the witches’ dance’ with Miss Barsch’s singing, was recalled five times. The audience seemed never to tire of it. ‘Isle of Spice’ advertising helped much.

Electric Crickets

This organization of one man and 9 women nicely costumed in a series of songs, special marches with electrical effects, etc. Make three changes of costume. First, that of the electric crickets with special electrical effects forming a very neat picture, Second, that of the Japanese Girls and the Third, that of Soldiers. At the finish of the act, showing the pictures of Lincoln, McKinley, Roosevelt, etc. spelling the names on the knapsacks which the girls carried. Quite a novel idea. It is as good as any girl act of this character we ever had. Received a fairly good hand at the finish. 21 min, full stage.
