12 min. in one. This man’s work is thoroughly unconventional. He has not much of a voice, but he makes up in vivacity of material what he lacks in his vocal ability. His best work is the impromptu song in which he takes various people in the audience as his theme, and cracking harmless little jokes at their expense. This was carefully done and did not give offence. On the contrary, got good applause.
A team of colored comedians and singers, consisting of four men and one woman. They have been over the circuit before, and it is a very good colored act. They have an extremely difficult place on the hill this week, but I am so situated that I can hardly avoid letting them stay here. They will, however, make good. 16 minutes in one.
2 men and a young woman in a singing dancing and comedy act. The comedy section of the act is rather old fashioned, but still they get away with it all right. The girl is a clever dancer and also one of the men, and they finish with some very good work. 16 minutes, open full stage, close with about 3 minutes in one.
These people surprised me, for the last time they played here I was not especially favorably impressed with their act, but the walked on this afternoon and made quite a pronounced impression. They first sing a medley which I think is about the best constructed thing of the sort I have ever heard. They tell a lot of “gags” and stories in a manner somewhat different from the ordinary talking team, and close with more singing. They made quite a hit this afternoon and are an exceptionally good team. 12 minutes in one.
20 min. full stage – Even from the old 3-a-day standpoint this is a poor act, judging from the fact that the woman is absolutely of no account, as she can neither sing nor act. Armstrong is a better comedian than his brother (of Armstrong and Wright) but is only fair, at that.
A man and woman in an act called “The Wandering Minstrels.” The man was formerly with the 3 Dumonts. (He is the fellow that played the guitar). The woman is Miss Louise Taylor, and she is a very good singer indeed. The man’s comedy makeup is about all there is to the act which entitles it to be called a comedy singing act, but their voices blend all right and they were very nicely received this afternoon. 11 minutes in one.
18 minutes in 1. Songs and stories. Good fast comedy. Going fine here.
Two men and one woman. This is the old team of Lavine with a man by the name of Cameron added, and is an eccentric comedy singing and dancing act. The Lavines were always good, and the man whom they have added is a very good acrobat indeed, and between the three they manage to do a turn that in full of life from the start to the finish and wins them two or three achoirs [sic]. 10 minutes in full stage.
Comedienne of syncopation. In one. 17 minutes. Success although her type of song. I imagine, would perhaps please a typical New York audience better. However, our people liked her and she was an undoubted success.
Presenting their harmonious comedy songologue “Wedding Bells”. Went over well. 16 minutes in one.
