Seven girls; two black-face; regular minstrel show and setting; have a handsome pink plush drop; this act went over very big, especially at the finish – patriotic number to close – eight curtains; 25 min. full stage.
“The Sprinting Messenger.” One straight and the other black face. Comedy cyclists; and excellent opening act. 9 minutes, full stage.
Black face, couple of songs, talking and a little dancing they told all the old jokes they ever knew, 17 minutes in one. Went big.
I wonder who dug this up. The two men form a black face team giving up the old Stranded Minstrel act which we have had in various forms in vaudeville ever since it has been vaudeville, and even dates back to the old variety days. More than twenty years ago, Hall & Stanley did it for us in white face, a dozen years ago Simmons & White revived it in black face, it formed the basis of McIntyre & Heath’s Georgian Minstrels and was originally performed by one of the original minstrel companies along 1850. Pistel & Cushing are offering it in practically its original form. They managed to get some laughs out of it, but I do not believe it will cause a tremendous rush to the box office. 12 minutes in one.
“Mistrelay Up-to-date.” Five girls in white and two men, blackface. Singing, dancing and comedy; 25 min. full stage; went good. The comedy in this act is the only thing to it, as far as singing is concerned there is not a singer in the bunch. I consider this show a very weak one indeed.
A minstrel comedy; three men, one white and two blackface; scene interior of livery stable. Singing, talking, dancing, yodeling and harmony. Three special drops; 20 minutes full stage; went very big.
14 min. These boys were a regular clean-up with their eccentric dancing. They work in blackface and evening clothes and offer a variety of stepping. This is one of the best acts of the kind we have seen for some time.
13 min. This is the first time this blackface comedian has played this house and he was a big laughing and applause hit. His material, while a bit loud, was very funny and he kept the audience in a roar of laughter during the whole time he occupied the stage, being forced to answer to several bows at the finish.
Blackface comedian, 18 min. (1) Some of his material is a bit timeworn, but it kept the laughter quite continuous, and the applause would indicate quite a success. He has been here too many times and there were many who remembered this fact.
“The Georgia Minstrels.” 41 min. The veteran blackface men were accorded a great reception on their entrance and kept the audience convulsed with laughter during the entire time they were on the stage. They have lost none of their entertaining ability nor their popularity. One of the best laughing hits we have had in the house in a long time.
