Black-face talking, singing and dancing act, peculiar style of eccentric dancing being the feature of their work. Good three a day turn. 17 min. in one, 3 shows.
A blackface character sketch. This quartette just closed with a minstrel company. The quartette is not up to the standard in comedy, but the singing went well with our audience. 18 min F.S. 6 in one.
3 shows, 16 mins. in 1. Black and white face talking comedians, the fellow who blacks up being quite clever. It is an excellent 3-a-day set.
Drop in one, 2 shows, 21 mins. Two men, singing and talking, billed as ‘The Singer and the Comedian.’ Gardner does the straight work, while Warner works in blackface. Gardner makes an excellent appearance, has a good delivery and a grand voice, and gives the act a tone of refinement. While Warner impersonates the negro character in great shape, and is an [sic] funny as any we have ever had. Their material is all new and the peduliar [sic] delivery of Warner made up as a Wench, which is a scream. The act is one of the laughing hits of the show.
Two girls doing blackface act, one of the team being exceptionally good, the other one fair. They score well at the finish as well as with one of the single songs. Good three a day act. 18 minutes, in one.
Drop in one. 20 mins. Two men in blackface makeup, singing, dancing and talking. Their singing is just passable, their talking is one of old style and introduces nothing new or bright. The dancing is the only redeeming point. This is the first I ever saw or heard of this pair, and as they were booked late to fill a vacancy, we were obliged to keep them on in this position. We are short acts in one, but they do deserve to be moved up considerably on the bill. 3 shows.
3 shows, 20 min, full stage. Two men and a woman; one man works in blackface and is a good comedian; the other man appears in Shakespearian costumes and is a clever burlesquer; Miss Tutain still retains much of her charm, and fills in the sketch acceptably. Scored one of the laughing hits of the show with the holiday crowd.
Two young men in black face singing, dancing, and talking act. The talk is very bad – about the worst that I have ever heard in my life – and if the act depended upon that alone I should have been obliged to cancel, but they really do some pretty good dancing, and it was pretty bright opening for the show I cut the talk down as mush as possible and let them continue. They are really very clever dancers. 12 min in one.
A review not necessary, on account of all managers being familiar with the act. My criticism is that their singing voices are very bad. However, they were received with very much interest and applause. Full stage.
In ‘A Lesson in Shakespeare’ CDF, 22 min, 3 shows. A pair of clever men, and working blackface, the other white, and a lady with pleasing voice and considerable ability, presenting a sketch laden with plenty of humor. The comedy efforts of the blackfaced member of the troupe won very much applause and carried them through to strong finish. The vocal efforts of the troupe are better than those of the usual order, and the act is a very acceptable in this place.
