Prior to the show, Aug went on record saying that she took to writing her own songs because only she could write songs that were pathetic and sad enough for her liking.
The reviewer, Richard Henry Little, remarks that "the orchestra members keep the music under the chairs when Miss Aug is not on stage" because "it makes them cry to look at it."
Edna Aug performed various songs, both her own "pathetic songs" and some "garden variety" pieces. She also performed a monologue. Her first two songs were "Don't Go in them Lion's Cage Tonight" and "The Fire in the Old Lumber Yard."
The audience responded to the act by calling for a "vociferous encore."
