For the first two
subjects, Mr. Gillam has selected an “Old
Salt” and “Fresh Salt” (sailor and boy).
Using some sort of pencil, he draws upon
the surface of the paper, without the
marks showing. Rapidly lining out the
heads, he thereafter spreads over the surface
a handful of a black substance which,
when rubbed off, leaves the heads in darkened
outline.
billed as "Puck's famous
cartoonist."
The sketching on white, with nothing
for the audience to follow, lends several
painful pauses to his act.
