The telephone operator is seated at the board at the side of the stage, while the compartments of those using the wire are illuminated as the occupants speak.
Hart presented for the first time "A Telephone Tangle," which is an improvement on the ill-fated "The Switchboard," to which it bears a striking similarity. As the title indicates, the piece has to do with a mix up in messages with an elopement as the basis. The names of the characters are indeed colourful, as witness: Adelaide Black, Tilly Green, Tom Brown, Myrtle Gray, and last, but not least, Rufus White, who is black; yes, just a "colored ge'man" seeking the recovery of his razor.
