mMusical McLain is in black face and plays several instruments, with a resting spell between selections devoted to the monolog.
There seems to be no apparent reason for McLain to make-up in black face. He uses no dialect, sings no "coon" songs and does nothing which could not be accomplished without the "eccentric" rig he effects.
