Miss Purcell made her "first American appearance" at the Colonial last week.
Her first three songs were "Jenny Jones," "The Gay Pianola" and "Any Windows to Mend." Each has three verses, rendered in a way to make them sound very much alike. The fourth and last number was a ballad.
She is a comely woman with a sweet voice, but swamped by poor material. The main problem is that there is not any differentiation or attempt at individual characterization. Moreover, the songs are not sufficiently pointed in story for a English comedienne. This places Miss Purcell in the class labelled non-successes.
